Tonight one of our favourite record labels, Eglo, celebrates it’s 2nd birthday at The C.A.M.P (City Road, Old Street Tube). It’s been an amazingly productive couple of years for label bosses Alex Nut and Sam Shepherd. These two boys don’t make it easy for themselves – not only do they oversee all Eglo releases and business, Alex has his popular Rinse FM show and Sam produces and remixes under his acclaimed Floating Points moniker. Added to this both have consistent DJ schedules – their selections being in demand here and internationally.
The story is well told but in case you didn’t know the pair finally met at Plastic People’s CDR night (a unique platform where novice producers bring their unreleased tracks to be played on the famously formidable sound system, and the audience votes with applause) Alex had been playing an unknown track in his DJ sets, but had no idea who was behind the music. As said track was dropped at CDR Alex asked the DJ to point out the owner/writer. Alex initially didn’t believe the young bespectacled lad to be it’s writer but would soon realize that Sam was becoming something of mad scientist in the studio. Although both very different people they bonded over some shared musical interests, finding links between Alex’s upbringing in Hip-Hop and graffiti and Sam’s Classical training and love of Jazz – this surely sowed the seeds of Eglo becoming one of the broadest labels ever regarding genre. Since Floating Points 1st ever release, the wonky sci-fi Hip-Hop of ‘For You’ and ‘Radiality’, they’ve also given us futuristic Acidic Electro via Funkin’ Even and the smooth soulful R&B of vocalist Fatima. Add to this jazzy neo Soul from Shaunise and glitchy spacey Dubstep from Arp 101 and we’re nearly running out of silly descriptive genres. We’re expecting Disco Metal by the end of 2011…. maybe.
So many reasons to come help celebrate this willfully eclectic group of artists and also rather decent guys and gals. Most of the previously mentioned roster are there tonight – expect the usual suspects on DJ duty, Alex Nut, Funkin’ Even and Floating Points but also Arp 101, and the gorgeous tones of Fatima. Also making an appearance is new signing Krystal Soul (AKA Krystal Klear and vocalist Oliver Daysoul) and a special treat in headliner Mary Anne Hobbs, herself being an early champion of Eglo’s output – she’s been greatly missed since the departure from her landmark Radio 1 Breezeblock specialist show.
The jump off starts at 10pm and runs things til 4am – get there early as this one will be busy and Fatima and Floating Points are on at 11pm. See you in the basement for the dance!
